Arrows Forward Thomas Announces Retirement from Professional Rugby
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TORONTO, ON – Toronto Arrows forward Corey Thomas – Arrow #84 – has officially announced his retirement from professional rugby following a memorable career that took the Canadian international across the globe.
“[I’m] closing the door after eight years of living my childhood dream,” said Thomas. “This career showed me the world and provided me with experiences that I’ll forever cherish. The people I’ve met, the coaches I’ve learnt from, and the teammates I’ve celebrated with have shaped the person I am today.”
“I’m forever indebted to this game. To my family and friends, thank you for the support and believing in me.”
Thomas, 28, spent the final year of his professional career with the Arrows. Though his season was cut short due to injuries, Thomas remained intent on helping his club by any means possible; when a return to the pitch was ruled out, he transitioned to a coaching / support staff role to ensure he’d continue to positively impact his teammates throughout the campaign.
“On behalf of the Arrows organization, I’d like to congratulate Corey on an exceptional career,” said Tim Matthews, Toronto Arrows Vice President and General Manager. “Despite the challenges faced this year, Corey was a true professional from the day he arrived, right up until the last day of the season.”
“It is with true sincerity that we wish him the best in his next chapter. There’s no doubt he will continue to make a positive impact in his future endeavours as he did with us.”
Thomas began his professional career in Australia’s National Rugby Championship, first with his hometown Perth Spirit in 2014, and later with Brisbane City the following year.
The versatile forward then travelled to Japan, where he featured for two seasons apiece with both the Top League’s Canon Eagles and the Top Challenge League’s Kaimaishi Seawaves before earning a contract with Super League side Sunwolves in 2020.
Thomas spent the past three years in North America, first with the Los Angeles Giltinis in 2021 and 2022, before moving north to Toronto earlier this year.
The Australian-born Canadian international, who was eligible to play for Canada through his Edmonton-born father, made his international debut for his adopted nation against England in July 2021. He went on to collect 11 caps (10 starts) and score seven tries.
