Toronto Arrows Announce Signing of Canadian Sevens Player Breen
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TORONTO, ON – The Toronto Arrows are pleased to announce the signing of fullback Ciaran Breen for the 2023 Major League Rugby season.
Breen, 21, will arrive at the club after spending several months with Canada’s men’s sevens program, highlighted by appearances at both the Commonwealth Games and the Rugby World Cup Sevens over the summer months.
“I’m really excited to join the Arrows and to play professionally in Canada,” said Breen. “From all the guys on the team that I’ve spoken with about signing here and gearing up for 2023, there’s a lot of confidence in the way this team is headed. I can’t wait to see where we can go.”
“There are so many great professionals on the Arrows that have played at the highest levels and possess a wealth of knowledge, and I’m really looking forward to coming in and learning from some of the best. I plan on diving in, being completely hands-on, and giving everything I can to help this team win a championship.”
Despite still several months shy of turning 22, the six-foot, 200-pound back has already enjoyed a rugby career that has seen him make stops across the globe.
After turning heads as an 18-year-old standout in his home province of British Columbia, Breen was invited to travel overseas to join French side Biarritz Olympique’s academy in 2019.
Following a year spent back home at the start of the pandemic, Breen was again extended an offer to develop his game in France, this time on a senior academy contract with Carcassonne signed in 2021; his professional debut in Pro D2 soon followed.
Breen’s bow for Canada on the World Rugby Sevens Series came shortly thereafter, with the speedy back earning national team call-ups for both stops on the abbreviated 2021 circuit.
After continuing with the sevens program throughout the spring and summer, the Victoria native has most recently been featuring for the Pacific Pride – Rugby Canada’s national development academy program – in the British Columbia Premier League as he prepares for the 2023 MLR season.
“Ciaran is a dynamic back that will really give us some pace and options,” said Mark Winokur, Toronto Arrows Chief Operating Officer and General Manager. “He was very good in France and has been outstanding in BC this fall, and we are excited to add him to our roster.”
The Canada under-20 graduate played his grassroots rugby with Cowichan.
The club will be making additional signing announcements in the coming weeks as 2023 season preparations continue to build.
The window to place a deposit to secure 2023 season memberships for the lowest possible price is now open. Packages for the club’s home matches at York Lions Stadium start at just $70 for a limited time only; early bird pricing ends on November 28, with 2023 pricing going into effect on November 29.
