(WHITBY, ON) – Rugby Ontario, in partnership with the Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative, is excited to announce athlete selections for its High Performance Academies. Working with technical partners at the Toronto Arrows, the Ontario Blues Junior Arrows Academy will run this offseason from November to April. The program consists of athletes ages 15 to 18 and will operate regionally with designated centres in Guelph, Whitby/Toronto, and Ottawa. In total, the program will engage more than 50 athletes from 18 different clubs across the province.
“Through the support and investment at our partners at the Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSI), and the Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI), the 2021-22 Academy is poised to be the best program to date,” said Sean Medeiros, Rugby Ontario High Performance Coordinator. “In development with our technical partners at the Toronto Arrows, we are excited to work with these players for the next six months and to provide them support in all areas of athlete development.”
This year, the announcement of the athlete selection list is made solemnly as we recognize the selection of Brock Marshall, who tragically passed on October 24. Although the program will be without Brock, it will continue to honour his memory and achievements.
“Brock Marshall was one of our top performers at the Ontario Blues Junior Arrows Academy trials,” said Paul Connelly, Rugby Ontario High Performance Manager. “As a 15-year-old, excellent results in combine testing, combined with his outstanding game play, resulted in Brock being selected to join the OJBAA Central Academy.”
“With the strong support of parents Rick and Diane – both former rugby players – and his local Brock Rugby Community guiding his development, we have no doubt that Brock would have had a very bright future representing Ontario and the Arrows. Our thoughts are with the Marshall family and the entire Brock Rugby Community.”
The program will operate regionally with designated centres in Guelph, Whitby/Toronto, and Ottawa. Each centre will provide technical/tactical training for all players as well as strength and conditioning programming. Access to key resources such as athletic therapy, nutritional support, mental performance coaching, and video review/analysis will also be provided to ensure the holistic development of all players. In addition, centralized training sessions and competitions will be scheduled throughout the six-month program.
Congratulations to all of the players selected to the OBJAA. Below are the selected athletes sorted by region.
