2023 Draft Recap: Arrows Select Canadian University Duo
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUSTIN, TX – The Toronto Arrows have selected a pair of Canadian university grads with the club’s picks in the 2023 Major League Rugby Collegiate Draft, taking Bishop’s University flanker Louis Millet in the second round and McGill University fly-half Monty Weatherall in the third round.
Millet, a senior out of Bishop’s University (Sherbrooke, Quebec), was selected at #15 overall. The six-foot-three, 215-pound loose forward helped lead his Gaiters side to a RSEQ semi-final appearance in 2022 and was named an RSEQ first-team all-star.
Born in Toulouse, France, Millet is a product of Avenir Casteneen’s Espoirs program. He notably suited up with the UBCOB Ravens in the 2022 Challenge Cup of the Americas, featuring in matches against SLAR sides Penarol and Jaguares XV.
Weatherall, a senior out of McGill University (Montreal, Quebec), was selected at #28 overall. He captained his Redbirds side to a RSEQ championship and a best-ever second-place finish at the 2022 Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship. Weatherall was named to the All-Tournament XV team after posting 20 of his team’s 45 points across three tournament games.
Following the 2022 season, the six-foot, 195-pound fly-half earned RSEQ rugby first-team all-star honours after winning the league scoring title with 63 points in seven contests.
Originally from Amersham, England, Weatherall played his grassroots rugby at his local club Amersham and Chiltern RFC and later developed in the London Wasps Academy before moving to Canada.
Since graduating, Weatherall has been living in Vancouver and playing for Meraloma Rugby Club and BC Bears. The fly-half notably featured for the Bears at the 2023 Coast to Coast Cup.
“We’re excited to welcome Louis and Monty into the Arrows organization,” said Tim Matthews, Toronto Arrows Vice President and General Manager. “Our staff was thorough in canvassing Canadian schools for talent, and these picks reflect the strength of the game coming out of Canada, Quebec specifically.”
“The additions of Louis and Monty bolster our organizational depth, and we’re looking forward to providing them with an environment to continue developing their game as they learn from our Senior Team players and coaching staff.”
