Arrows Drop Match to Raptors in Snowy Glendale
3 March 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GLENDALE, CO – Despite a dominant scrum and inspired defence, the Toronto Arrows couldn’t overcome tumultuous weather conditions in the club’s 22-0 road loss to the Glendale Raptors on Saturday evening.
Playing in a cauldron of heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures, Toronto found it difficult to generate offence in the -12 C conditions at Infinity Park.
Glendale capitalized on its opportunities, scoring two tries in each half en route to a win in its frosty home opener. Prop Chad Gough and fullback Dylan Taikato-Simpson struck in the opening frame, while wing Harley Davidson scored just minutes after the restart and replacement prop Zach Fenoglio barged over in the final seconds of the match to seal the victory.
“I’ve been involved in some matches with high winds and heavy rains where the weather has dictated the pace of the game, but I’ve never seen anything like the conditions in this game,” said Arrows Director of Rugby Chris Silverthorn. “It was tough to generate momentum and flow in the freezing weather, but I want to commend our guys for a fantastic effort in the snow. There are positives to take from the match, especially when you look at the work of our forwards, who performed very well in the scrum.”
Toronto had eight players unavailable for the match, with six representing Canada and a further two featuring for Uruguay at the Americas Rugby Championship over the weekend.
“We have three more games left on this road trip before we head back to Toronto for our home stretch, and with the Americas Rugby Championship wrapping up, we’ll have our internationals back in the mix as well,” added Silverthorn. “We’ve received great contributions up and down our roster to date, and our depth has been tested during these gruelling stretches. We’re getting close to the point where we’ll have a lot more consistency in our day-to-day routines.”
The defeat drops Toronto’s record to 2-3-0, and moves the expansion club to sixth in league standings with 12 points. Glendale’s bonus-point win vaults the Colorado outfit to fourth in the league table with a 2-2-1 record and 15 points.
Saturday’s game was the fifth of eight consecutive away matches for Canada’s first professional rugby union team. Toronto’s extended road trip will be followed by eight consecutive home matches between April 7 and June 2 to close out the club’s regular season.
The Arrows enter round seven of the season with an away match against the second place San Diego Legion on Sunday, Mar. 10.
