Arrows Academy to Face New England Independents, Melrose in Late July
TORONTO, ON – Two matches have been announced for the Toronto Arrows Senior Academy later this month, with the Young Arrows set to face the New England Independents in Oakville ahead of meeting Scottish touring side Melrose RFC in Burlington.
Fresh off their recent victory over Canada U20 East earlier in the month, the Arrows Academy will welcome New England’s development side to Crusaders Park in Oakville on Saturday, July 23.
The Young Arrows faced the Independents in Boston this past March, marking the first match of the Academy’s inaugural season.
The following week after playing New England, the Academy will square off against Scottish Super 6 side Melrose at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington; the midweek clash will be contested the evening of Thursday, July 28.
Melrose was founded in 1877, and notably created the sport of rugby sevens in 1883 when club member Ned Haig, a local butcher, came up with the game as a way to raise funds for the club. The nine-time Scottish champions have produced several Scottish internationals, including Doddie Weir (two of his sons will be included in the touring squad), Craig Chalmers, Bryan Redpath, Jim Telfer, and, more recently, Kelly Brown.
